Still remember when I ate shrimp lettuce wraps for the first time and I totally loved it! The crispy crushed fried bread sticks mixed with crunchy water chestnut and savory shrimps, all wrapped with fresh crisp lettuce. That is one of the “high end” dishes that I only get when we go to a good restaurant, little did I know how easy this dish is.
Nowadays you see all different kinds of lettuce wrap. The trick to make good lettuce wrap is to have crunchy stuff, fried wonton, fried bread sticks, even chips. However, we are introducing the most traditional one here for you.
Shrimp Lettuce Wrap Ingredients:
- 10.5 oz of shrimps
- 10.5 oz of water chestnuts
- 5.5 oz of fried bread sticks
- 1 bundle of green onions
- 0.5 oz of egg white
- 1 tbs of sweet potato starch
- 1 round lettuce
Seasoning:
- 1/2 tbs of sesame oil
- 1/2 tbs of rice wine
- 1 tsp of white pepper
- 1 tsp of salt
First, carefully separate each lettuce leaf. One very quick way to do this without breaking them is to cut the stem of the leaves and rinse the whole lettuce with water, water will gently push the lettuce leaves out without breaking it.
After cutting lettuce to nice round shape, you can keep them in ice-cold water to preserve the freshness and crisp.
Dice all your ingredients. put a pinch of salt and white pepper to your raw diced shrimps to add some flavor to it.
Mix shrimps with egg white.
Fry the shrimp first. The temperature is not very strict here since you need to take them out once them turn red.
Prepare the diced bread sticks first. You can either bake it or fry it. Personally, I like frying over baking. Remember to dice them before you either bake or fry them unless your fried bread sticks are really fresh and crunchy. Soon as you see them turn darker brown, remove them from fryer or oven and let them cool down.
Start with water chestnut first. It takes longer to cook. Stir fry at medium heat for about 5 mins
Add all other ingredients except the green onions, the reason is that it will turn yellowish if you cook it too long.
Add all other ingredients and the seasoning and then stir fry for another 5 to 10 mins. Add the green onion the last. You are almost ready to serve!
Mix all ingredients with diced fried bread sticks. put a scoop of them in a lettuce wrapper. Enjoy your authentic shrimp lettuce wrap!
- 300 g of shrimps
- 300 g of water chestnuts
- 160 g of fried bread sticks
- 1 bundle of green onions
- 24 g of egg white
- 1 tbs of sweet potato starch
- 1 round lettuce
- ½ tbs of sesame oil
- ½ tbs of rice wine
- 1 tsp of white pepper
- 1 tsp of salt
- Cut lettuce to round wrappers, keep in cold water
- Dice all ingredients
- Bake or fry diced fried bread sticks to crispy
- Fry or stir fry shrimps to just cooked
- Stir fry diced water chestnut first for ~5 mins
- Add shrimps with seasoning and continue to stir fry for another 5 mins
- Add green onions, stir fry for another 2 mins
- Mix with diced fried bread sticks
